Chester in winter – hardly a thought that needs me to tell you how fabulous a setting that is. I have resisted the urge to do as many have done and photograph the Ferris wheel which currently adorns the city landscape. It is a photographers perfect feature though so I still may have my take on it before it is packed away in 2011. This was a wintry evening just before Christmas and I had to call in to Chester to MOT the car, so while it was under scrutiny I had a walk up to the cross with camera to see what sprung out at me.
I’ve been looking through photographs taken with the Hasselblad 503cx lately and the combination of square crop and film has me a little hooked. If I had £2k to blow on a camera with little purpose I might just consider buying one, but for now I wanted to try and create a similar effect from the 5D in low light. I also wanted to capture some movement in people, so there was a lot to aim for and I ended up with surprisingly few duds. Here are some of my favorites, treated to a square crop and a Fuji 400H film effect.
Let me know if you like them!
And this one just as it started to snow – no special film effects or crops on this, it’s as it came out of the camera.
Overall, I’m pretty pleased with the result. 🙂
